Creating a Pin Board

The same weekend I got the Pig had to go, my sister Cheryl and I went to an antique barn, we both bought an old map/blueprint or printers drawer. She made a printer box chalk board out of hers (see on State-line Crafter's); and me, I sat on mine for months, contemplating the project. I finally decided a pin board.

With all my supplies, I first measured, then cut a piece of white board to fit, glued in drawer, measured and cut a piece of cork to fit over that, glued, then set out to make it fun and practical for me.

I salvaged this measuring stick from an old yard ornament that my grandmother made, cut to fit up the side, glued.

On the back, I measured then glued a piece of wood to even both sides, twisted in hangers, and put wire through each hole to hang on the wall.

Now I'm going to decorate. I made a little box out of a paint stick for pencils and pens, you can never find one when you need one....glued the box on the bottom ledge of the drawer.

I found a cute little bird house with birch roof, glued it onto a stick, and glued to the side of the board.

While looking for baby clothes pins, which I glued three going down the side to hang photos/coupons, I came across this little picket fence, Mother had for some reason. I added it to the bottom for a quick catch all.

Printed out the month of June's dates to remember,

pinned a lemonade recipe I've been wanting to try,

and wa..la... my pin board is finished

Scads of Scraps

What do I do with scads of scraps from kitchen towels I cut to make my world famous Easy Hanging Towel, well maybe I exaggerate, a little, it's famous.... in the family.

My Sisters, my Kids, my Nieces all just love it. I make and give them away for almost every holiday. For Christmas gifts I sat down and whipped out 13 towels quickly, they had to be wrapped and shipped, cause I was going to spend 2 weeks in Cabo for Christmas (woot woot) ...... anyways, with all of these towels I'd made, I have scads of scrap towels left over.

With the leftovers from these 3 spring towels I just finished, I made 2 hanging dish rags, and 1 potholder.

For the hanging dish rag, I took the towel piece 15 1/2" x 8 1/2", cut off the top, then folded over and pinned each side, sewed along the edges, adding a loop in the middle to hang.

For the pot holder I cut the 3 edges, cut it in half, cut a piece,

7 1/2" x 8" of heat resistant fabric to fit, made my own bias tape from the same fabric on the hanging towel. Pinned it, sewed the 3 pieces corner to corner then pinned the bias tape around and sewed, leaving 3" at the end to flip under the bias tape for a loop to hang the pot holder.

Wala ........ all 3 match and make a nice gift for someone special.

Hanging Towel with added Flare

Easy Hanging Towel

With my sewing supplies in WI, while I was there I was determined to bring something back with me to Mexico so I could sew, (even though I know I have to hand sew.) I went through my sewing bin for all I need to make my Hanging Towel. I don't have one on my stove here, I miss my towel not falling off when I'm cooking.

While digging I found a finished towel that was already stamped.

My wonderful sister bought a stamp with my trademark.
Now I have the pattern, the towel (material), the fat-quarters, pins, needles, thread, scissors (forgot a thimble). I'll heal.....

Trash Can Lampshade

This is how it looked after the road trip!

When my Daughter moved from WI to NC, the plastic in her lampshade on her favorite lamp was broken out. Being a "poor" student, she has other more important things to spend her monies on. While taking out the trash one day, I noticed boxes full of junk in the dumpster.

This lampshade was in there. Other than looking old and yellowed, it was in perfect condition, (I mean the plastic wasn't broke up!). I grabbed it out of the trash and recovered it for Miss Deby.

I pulled off the trim that was yellowed and wiped it down with a sanitize wipe.

I laid the lampshade on tissue paper and traced it as I rolled it to make the pattern.

Pinned it and cut out the fabric.

I mod podged the fabric on to the lampshade.

Easy Peasy!

Is it me, or is he scary looking? I rubbed his Buddha belly for luck, just the same!

A gift for baby

I wanted to make this Old-fashioned bonnet for my niece, who is about to have her first baby. Since her generation does not like to be surprised at the birthing, we all know it’s a baby girl. Her name is Madison Rose….awe.

When considering the fabric I would use, it dawned on me that I had this night gown. I wore it once for about 5 minutes. My boyfriend commented that it made me look like an old granny. It’s been sitting in a drawer for ever since. With the ruffle, the trim and the lacy embellishments on bodice, I figured it would be perfect for the bonnet.

I basically followed the instructions for the Old-fashioned bonnet, except (of course I changed it). Here’s what I did different. In her photo you can tell that baby is not a newborn. So I re-sized it, and followed her instructions up to this step.
Step 4: Form the unstitched end of a tie into a Z (fold it in thirds) and pin it to the large rectangle about 1.25″ back from the decorative trim along the 16″ side. Repeat with the other tie on the other side.

What I did was to fold up the rectangle (measuring all across to be sure that the ruffle was even from top to bottom), and stitch only the sides.

Pinning the ties inside.

I turned it outside in and pressed it with an iron. Then pin the opening and the raw end of the ruffle and top stitch both sides and stitched the opening. Sew close to the edge.

Per her instructions fold up the bottom, creating a casing for the back ribbon, pin and stitch close to the edge.

I centered and sewed the pretty laced ribbon on the front seam across the ruffle. On the back seam I sewed the trim.

I know, I was a purty baby!

Now after it was finished I had no way to gauge whether it would fit a new born or not. So I researched the average size of a newborn baby's head, enlarged a doll head pattern, printed off my baby picture, to make it more realistic, (hehe), I laughed the whole time, come on, that's funny. And this is how it looked, when I was taking the pictures for this post, my boyfriend come around the corner and caught a look of the baby face, and jumped, he didn't expect it.....I'm still laughing.

I made this for baby Madison. A romper with a matching bonnet 3M. For the bonnet I partially used Simplicity A2104 pattern and of course I changed it. I got the romper pattern from you can make this.com it's called THE CHELSEA ROMPER SIZES 3M-5T. What's cool about this pattern, it's downloaded so you can print it as you use it; and with it going all the way up to a 5T, I can make it for my Ella Bear, too.

Easy Carry Picnic Blanket

I saw a beach blanket that had the coolest handle with straps on it. I was thinking, what an awesome idea for a picnic blanket. After all, I have that awesome Great Find picnic basket, I want to picnic this summer.....

I stopped at one of our local thrift stores and found this tablecloth. It was priced at $8.00, but I happened to walk in on half price day (sweet), so $4.
For this project
1 tablecloth (rectangle)
1 package rug binding (white)
4 inches of hook and loop velcro
sewing machine, thread, scissors, pins

Instructions
1. Lay an H on the folded end of the tablecloth, these measurements are 17" for straps and 8" for handle.
2. Pin velcro on both ends of strap; hook up, loop down on the opposite side of the strap, opposite end. Then sew around all 4 pieces of the velcro to the straps.
3. Double the handle to make it sturdier; sew two 8" pieces together.

4. Take finished pieces and form H onto tablecloth, pinning down, with the Hook side of the velcro straps up. Leave the loop side (down)unsewn, (you may want to pin them out of your way.)

5. Sew close to the edge, sewing over the handle, then stopping.

6. Sew all the way around the handle end forming a square, then sew corner to corner, to secure the handle. Repeat on the other strap.
